Student Organizations – Shorter University

There really is something for everyone at Shorter. With over 35 student organizations, 21 athletic teams, intramural events like dodgeball and basketball tournaments, and theater productions, there is always something fun and interesting happening at Shorter.

While classroom instruction is important, you can’t discover your path in life without real responsibilities and relationships. Shorter offers dozens of extracurricular activities, groups, and resources that help you explore the boundaries beyond the books.

DEPARTMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS

Allied Health Club – This organization strives to help its members achieve greatness in the pre-professional realm. To accomplish this, the members get the opportunities to go visit graduate schools of the pre-professional variety (Medical schools, physical therapy, pharmacy, etc.). This organization also gives back to the community and the faculty on campus. Advisor – TBA

Alpha Chi – Alpha Chi is a prestigious national honor society open to the top 10% of Juniors and Seniors academically. Membership is by invitation only.

American Chemical Society (ACS)-promotes the study of chemical science and professionalism in chemical sciences through touring graduate schools and helping with undergraduate research funds. The members also strive to give back to the community and faculty on campus.  Advisor – TBA

Collegiate Music Educators’ National Conference (CMENC )/ American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA) – The purpose of this ACDA student chapter is to foster and promote the activity of choral singing which includes the organization, development, and understanding of choral activities. Specifically, the Shorter University ACDA chapter searches to serve the surrounding community through choral-related activities. Faculty advisor – TBA

English Club – To share our passion for literature and the English language with others. We strive to offer events that are culturally stimulating. We want to create an interest for literature and the English language among our peers. Advisor – Dr. Julie Pond

Eta Pi Sigma (History Club) – Eta Pi Sigma is the student club for all students interested in History and Political Science. Membership is open to all members of the Shorter community and anyone interested, regardless of major, is encouraged to join, although officers of the club must be history or political science majors. The purpose of Eta Pi Sigma is “to promote the exchange of ideas – between local historians and members; to promote awareness of political events, through speakers from political fields; to stimulate interest in the field of history and to acquire knowledge of current happenings in the field; to organize visits to historical and political attractions; and to organize and sponsor speakers from political and historical fields.” Faculty advisor – Justin Pettegrew

Kappa Delta Pi – Promote excellence in Education.

Lambda Pi Eta (Communication Studies) – National Communication Association’s official honor society recognizes, fosters, and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement while stimulating interest in the communication discipline.

Math Club – The Mathematics Department has a Math Club that is open to all students, but primarily consists of students majoring in mathematics, mathematics education, and middle grades education majors concentrating in mathematics. Faculty Advisor – Dr. Larue Huckaby

NAFME – NAFME is an organization of American music educators dedicated to advancing and preserving music education and as part of the core curriculum of schools in the United States. Advisor – Dr. Dustin Burgess

Pi Kappa Lambda – The primary objective of PI KAPPA LAMBDA is the recognition and encouragement of the highest level of musical achievement and academic scholarship. Read more>

Shorter Student Nursing Association – Shorter Student Nursing Association (SSNA) is a local chapter of the State Association of Nursing Students (GANS) and National Student Nursing Association (NSNA) organizations. The mission is to mentor students preparing for initial licensure enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing programs. The organization promotes the standards, ethics, and skills that students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the profession.

To promote the profession and the safety of the public, SSNA works together with other chapters at the state and national level to increase professionalism, to access resources, and to participate in legislative efforts. In addition, at the community level, the SSNA chapter participated in multiple charity and service events such as Toys for Tots, Parkinson’s walk, and supplies for an orphanage in Haiti. In 2013 – 2014, SSNA participated in the GANS student nursing convention and attended the National NSNA convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. At these conventions, the student membership heard National and State nurse leaders and attended multiple sessions of up to date evidence-based information specific to health care.

SSNA had a strong delegation in the House of Delegates and participated in issues specific to policy and legislation. SSNA provides a forum for its membership to grow and flourish in a professional, safe environment. Faculty advisor  – TBA

Sigma Beta Delta – International honor society recognizing and promoting achievement in business, management and administration.

Sigma Tau Delta – International honor society to confer distinction for high achievement in English language, literature, and writing and dedicated to fostering literacy and all aspects of the discipline of English. Advisor – Angie O’Neal

Student National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) – The purpose of this organization is to advance knowledge about the National Association of Teachers of Singing and professors of teaching and singing while also representing future music educators’ and performers’ needs and wants in regards to furthering student knowledge and awareness of vocal health, vocal scholarship, science and teaching practices. Advisor – TBA

Theta Alpha Kappa is the honor society for the School of Christian Studies, and is a related scholarly organization of the American Academy of Religion, and affiliate society of the Council of Societies for the Study of Religion, and a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.  The purpose of Theta Alpha Kappa is to honor those who have shown excellence of achievement and promise of continued growth in the disciplines of Religious Studies and Theology.  The Society aims to further the disciplines of Christian Studies by encouraging research, good teaching, publication, and an intellectual and social exchange among students, teachers, and writers of the disciplines. Tri Beta – Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Advisor – Dr. Clint Helms

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Added Bonus – promotes all types of music through female voices as well as creates a bond amongst the women in the group. We also aim to promote Shorter University in a positive light and help recruit future students. Advisor – David Roland

Alpha Delta Pi – Established in 1851, Alpha Delta Pi is committed to sisterhood, values and ethics, high academic standards and social responsibility. Since 1979, Alpha Delta Pi has been committed to serving Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Over the course of our partnership, Alpha Delta Pi has contributed more than $5 million to this worthwhile cause. RMHC supports Ronald McDonald Houses, Care Mobiles, and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in local communities and also funds grants to other nonprofit organizations whose programs focus on children in need.

Baptist Collegiate Ministries – At Shorter University, Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) is a group of students seeking God, sharing the Gospel, and serving others. Whether these actions take place worshiping at our weekly meeting, laughing on a mission trip, leading a small discipleship group, or playing with kids, our purpose is to love God with all of our being. Christian Leaders on the Hill (CLOTH) – The purpose of Christian Leaders on the Hill is to provide servant leadership support and training for Christian Studies majors and minors in their present and future ministries around the world. Advisor – Dr. Brent Baskin

Delta Sigma Phi – Delta Sig has been an active, national fraternity since 1899 with over 120,000 initiated members and over 100 chapters. It has grown to become one of the most powerful national organizations with the goals of having over 200 active chapters and 10,000 undergraduate members by 2025. It is Delta Sig’s mission of building better men: men of courage, men of action, and men of excellence that cause it to strive to become the nation’s leading fraternity in executive-leadership experience. Delta Sig has been at Shorter since 2003 when it nationalized from the Zeta Rho local, social fraternity. Since, the Theta Psi Chapter of Delta Sig at Shorter has unofficially adopted Zeta Rho’s motto as their campus motto: Unity Through Diversity.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) – Presents student athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. Contact TBA

Fitton Activities Board (FAB) – Provides entertainment opportunities such as films, dances, concerts, and special events for students. Advisor – TBA

Hawks Sports Society – The Hawks Sports Society is a student led organization that encourages and creates network and volunteer opportunities to prepare students for their career paths post-graduation. We encourage students to be involved in the local community, by giving back to those who uplift us. Through this organization, we are confident that students will be prepared for their next chapter in life.  Hawks support Hawks!

Kappa Sigma – Kappa Sigma is focused upon the Four Pillars of FELLOWSHIP, LEADERSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP and SERVICE. As a values-based men’s fraternity, Kappa Sigma strictly forbids hazing and fosters meaningful college experiences by offering progressive membership development and pledge education.

Order of Omega – To excel academically in Greek Life while maintaining a great GPA and bettering our school community. Advisor – TBA

Panhellenic Council – Governing body for all female Greek organizations at Shorter University. Advisor – TBA

Phi Mu – Founded in 1852, Phi Mu is a women’s organization which provides personal and academic development, service to others, commitment to excellence, and lifelong friendship through a shared tradition. Advisor – Kathy Cook

Secret Sophomore Sabots – a group of sophomores who are secretly picked by previous Sabots to promote school spirit at Shorter. Sabots are responsible for getting the students of Shorter excited about the school in which they attend and to promote a sense of pride among the Shorter community. Advisor – TBA

Shorter University International Society – Facilitates the orientation of new international students and encourages cultural exchanges. Faculty Advisor – Linda Palumbo-Olzanski

Student Government Association (SGA) – Allocates student activity fee funds, appoints students to campus committees, and helps promote positive relationships between students, faculty, and administration. Seven senators are elected by the incoming freshman class after fall classes begin; the rest are elected by the entire student body at the end of the previous school year.

Shorter Ambassadors – Assists Admissions in promoting pride and communicating an increased understanding of Shorter as public relations representatives for the University. Interview process required. Advisors – TBA

Shorter Orientation Staff (SOS) – Assists the Office of Student Life in conducting activities for Hawk Orientation sessions, check-in/check-out for camps and conferences, and Camp Hawk. Interview process required. Advisor – TBA

Shorter University Student Alumni Association (SUSAA) – The Shorter University Student Alumni Association (SUSAA) is an undergraduate initiative to promote an awareness of the importance of giving to Shorter University. As current students experiencing the gifts of our alumni, we must begin to take responsibility for future generations. As alumni, we are accountable for the continual success Shorter achieves. A relationship with Shorter does not end at Commencement. – Advisor TBA

Student Art League – We, the Student Art League, wish to raise awareness of the visual arts on the Shorter University campus by enhancing artistic appreciation through art related events as well as providing a sense of community among students interested in the visual arts.

Zeta Tau Alpha – Zeta Tau Alpha, founded in 1898, is the 3rd largest national sorority in the United States. Stretching from coast to coast, our sisters contribute their time and talents towards spreading breast cancer awareness to women. Collectively, ZTA has donated $1.6 million to support breast cancer education and awareness since 1992. Our chapter at Shorter University also plans fun sisterhood events such as formals, date nights, mixers, intramural sports, and inter-greek activities. Staff Advisor – TBA

MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS

The Hawk Eye Magazine – Faculty Advisor – Melissa Baskin

Chimes – The Chimes Literary Magazine is a student operated magazine that publishes creative writing. The magazine accepts submissions in the categories of photography, art, non-fiction prose, poetry, and short stories. The Chimes offers writers of poetry and short stories a chance to compete for cash prizes in the annual creative writing contest. Additionally, The Chimes offers awards for artwork. While all submissions will be considered for publication, prizes will only be awarded to students enrolled at Shorter University.
