Loving God, Loving Others, Living Community
Chapel provides our academic community an opportunity to gather for worship and spiritual encouragement. Through music, God’s Word, & creative arts, faculty, staff, & students are challenged to love God, love others, & and to live out their faith in community. Students, staff, & faculty are encouraged to attend and participate in this worship experience. Our worship band is led by one of our music faculty. Students, faculty, & staff are welcome to be a part of the worship through music, testimonies, & creative arts.
We meet every Wednesday at 11 .a.m in Brookes Chapel which is located on the second floor of the Minor Fine Arts Building. Different emphases are offered throughout the academic year (e.g. Campus Revival, Christian Focus Week, & Holy Week) to further inspire and challenge us to grow deeper in our faith and to make disciples of all the nations.
In Chapel, our goal is to:
Worship & Praise our Living God, Live out our faith in community, & Declare His Glory among the nations.
Psalm 96:1-3 “O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.”
Who is God? What is he really like? How is a Christ follower to live in this world today? How do we live out our faith in community? These are some of the questions we will be seeking to answer in Chapel this fall at Shorter. Words like hope, love, trust, faith, and grace take on new meaning for us when we desire to know God personally and to follow him with all our life. Yet it is hard for many of us as we often fail and neglect our relationship with God. We let the troubles and hardships we face each day discourage us. It often leaves us feeling defeated. How can we ever live out the words of Jesus?
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus concludes his sermon with these words, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on the house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against the house, and it fell —- and great was its fall!” (Matthew 7:24-27). We follow Christ by doing the things he has commanded not as rules or laws, but as a new way of living.
We do not change under our own strength or willpower. It is by God’s grace and the Holy Spirit that we are transformed. Are we spending time alone with God? Is there a desire to be in His Word? How are you living out your faith in your community? Paul writes in Romans, “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) We live out our faith by this renewal of the mind which is enabled by the Spirit of God. The Greek word “metanoia”, which is translated in our Bible as “repent”, can be translated “to change one’s mind or one’s way of thinking.” We practice spiritual disciplines to change how we live.
This year we want to look at how we may be transformed by the Spirit of God. We see this happening most of all when we are in community. We are encouraged and challenged by those we are living life with. It is the Spirit of God which guides us to Him and each other. Let’s build our house on the solid rock, The Christ!
