Shorter University was founded in 1873 as a liberal arts institution, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences takes that vision to heart. The General Education core is housed primarily in our college, as we help prepare students for the rigor of their chosen majors. In addition, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is home to numerous different degrees with diverse majors.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences

Welcome to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). Our mission is to develop in students the ability to discover, create, evaluate, apply, and share knowledge. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences accomplishes its mission through academically rigorous and relevant programs of study designed to promote academic excellence, spiritual growth, Christian leadership, and global service within the context of a biblical worldview.

CHSS is a diverse and dynamic college that focuses on a wide range of disciplines related to the study of human society, culture, behavior, faith, and thought. Our programs encompass numerous fields, including but not limited to:

1. Humanities:

  • Christian Studies: A study of the Bible as a personal, spiritual, and academic practice to understand its teachings and relevance for today.
  • Communication: A study of communication theory, digital production, interpersonal communication in various contexts using a variety of media.
  • Literature: The study of English, Spanish, and French written and oral works, including novels, poetry, drama, and more.
  • History: Investigation of past events, societies, and cultures to understand the development of human civilization.
  • Languages: The study of modern and biblical languages, their structures, and their cultural contexts.2. Social Sciences:
  • Criminal Justice: Study of theories, laws, policies, and practices associated with understanding human behavior, the law, and responses to violations of the law.
  • Human Services: An interdisciplinary field of studies devoted to meeting human needs through applied knowledge and skills to improve the overall quality of life.
  • Political Science: Exploration of government, political systems, and the behavior of political actors.
  • Psychology: The scientific study of behavior, thoughts, and emotions.
  • Sociology: Examination of human societies, their structures, institutions, and social behaviors.The College of Humanities and Social Sciences serves a crucial role at Shorter University by providing students with a well-rounded education that emphasizes a Christian worldview, critical thinking, communication skills, and a deep understanding of human behavior and society. Students in CHSS programs often engage in research, analysis, and discussions that promote a deeper appreciation of the human experience and help them develop skills relevant to various careers.Faculty members in CHSS teach in their respective fields, contributing to the advancement of knowledge while equipping students with skills to address a variety of societal issues. They are accessible which makes it easier to reach them whenever you have questions. Moreover, CHSS programs can prepare students for a wide range of careers, including teaching, research, public relations, social services, digital and print communication, law, ministry, and more. The value of our programs is demonstrated in the success of our graduates.
