Student Government Association (SGA) - Shorter University
Sheffield-Thompson Building on Rome campus

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. ~ Colossians 3:23-24

What is SGA?

The Student Government Association represents all full-time undergraduate students at Shorter University. SGA provides an opportunity for all students to actively contribute to the academic and social climate of the campus. SGA is the voice of the student body to the administration.

The Student Government allocates student activity fee funds, appoints senators to working committees, and helps promote positive relationships between students, faculty, and administration.

All students at Shorter University are a part of SGA. However, only committee members, elected officials, and appointed officials are considered active.

The SGA Executive Board is comprised of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and FAB Directors. These individuals serve as the primary Student Government Association liaisons with the faculty, staff and administration. Seven senators are elected by the incoming freshman class after fall classes begin; the rest are elected by the entire student body at the end of the previous school year.

Shorter University encourages students to participate in the governance of the campus community. One avenue for this participation is through the election of student leaders. The elected representatives of the student body include the Student Government Association President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, FAB Directors, and twenty eight Senators representing each class on campus.

The Senate meets weekly to discuss and address issues of campus concern. Weekly meetings are open to all students and other members of the Shorter University community. Everyone is encouraged to attend, to voice opinions, or to listen and observe. The Student Senate is conducted by the Vice President of SGA through Roberts Rules of Order.

The Fitton Activities Board is an extension of SGA that is focused on programming. The Board has 4 committees, each with a chairperson, that specialize in a different area of programming and concerns. The Executive Board meets weekly, independently of SGA Senate meetings.

All members of the University community are invited to visit the Student Government Association office, which is located in the Fitton Student Union, room 229. You can reach the SGA Office at 706-233-7485 or sga@shorter.edu.
