Shorter University’s Brady School of Nursing Hosts Career Day
Shorter University’s Brady School of Nursing hosted a career day for senior nursing majors on Tuesday, April 12, at the Thornwood Campus.
The career day was designed to provide Shorter’s 30 senior nursing majors with information related to the nursing profession and allow them to connect with potential employers, according to Assistant Professor of Nursing Christine Donadio, who coordinated the event.
The day’s activities included a roundtable discussion with state legislators on the topic of health care. Senator Chuck Hufstetler (R-52) and Representatives Katie Dempsey (R-13) and Trey Kelley (R-16) attended, discussing health care-related legislative issues with the students.
“This is special for us to have these state legislators here,” said Donadio. “Each of these individuals have served on committees related to education and health and human services. They agreed to come and give our students an idea of what we can advocate for as a nursing profession.”
Following the roundtable, the senior nursing majors visited the Vendor Fair, featuring 11 different hospitals, health care providers and graduate nursing programs.
Four Shorter University nursing graduates took part in an alumni panel discussing the transition from nursing school to the nursing profession. Panel participants included Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates Zach Whitener, class of 2013; Jordan McPherson and Sheena Woods, class of 2014; and Mary Kate Smith, class of 2015.
Other activities included an appreciation breakfast hosted by Redmond Regional Medical Center, one of the nursing students’ clinical sites, and a resume workshop led by Shorter’s Career Development Coordinator Chris Wheelus.
