Shorter University Music Majors to Participate in Knight Performers Competition
Shorter University will host the 15th annual William and Mary Ann Knight Performers Competition on Monday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Brookes Chapel. During the event, students will vie for two scholarships named in honor of longtime music faculty members, William and Mary Ann Knight. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Exclusive to Shorter University music majors, the scholarship competition was established by friends, family and colleagues of the Knights to honor and reward Shorter University students who have achieved the highest levels of musical performance. Two scholarships are awarded annually, one in the area of vocal performance and one in the area of keyboard performance.
“The Knight Performers Competition is one of my favorite events of each academic year,” said Dr. Alan Wingard, dean of Shorter’s School of Fine and Performing Arts. “This wonderful evening represents the best of the best from our students as they showcase their musical talents and abilities.”
William Knight, who taught at Shorter from 1964 to 2004, is a retired distinguished professor of piano. Mrs. Knight was a member of the music faculty from 1965 until her retirement in 2009. Jointly, the Knights were selected as the 2010 National Teachers of the Year by the Music Teachers National Association.
