Shorter University Honors Two Faculty Members for Outstanding Achievement

Faculty members Dr. Greg Richardson and Dr. Fabrice Poussin were recognized for outstanding dedication and achievement during Shorter University’s recent Awards Day.
“Shorter University is blessed to have committed faculty members who are dedicated to our mission of Transforming Lives through Christ,” said Shorter University President Dr. Don Dowless. “Both Dr. Richardson and Dr. Poussin are wonderful examples of servant-leaders who work and serve here in order to provide our students with a high quality education and to help their students grow into the individuals God has prepared them to be. We are proud to recognize both of them for their outstanding work to promote student success.”
Dr. Richardson, the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Economics in Shorter’s Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business, received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship. The $1,500 cash award recognizes the contributions and achievements of a senior professor.
A native of Australia who was raised in Kentucky, Dr. Richardson joined the Shorter faculty in 1982. His teaching responsibilities typically include Business Statistics, Business Computing, the Theory of Games, Sports Economics, International Economics, and Health Economics.
“We are extremely fortunate to have a professor of Dr. Richardson’s caliber at Shorter University,” said Shorter University Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Donald Martin. “His experience in academia has well prepared him as a successful mentor of students and effective leader among our faculty. Through his vision and dedication, we fully expect our Ledbetter College of Business to grow and flourish.”
Dr. Richardson is a graduate of Cornell University, from which he earned the Bachelor of Arts with a major in Mathematics, a Master of Arts in Economics and a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics. His interests have been focused on mathematical and economic models of individual and group decision-making, and how those models can be applied to areas as diverse as sports, healthcare, and religion. He is a member of the Association of Christian Economists, the North American Association of Sports Economists, and the Southern Economic Association. He has published in the journal Social Choice and Welfare.
Dr. Poussin, Assistant Professor of French in Shorter’s College of Arts and Sciences, was presented with the 2016 Vulcan Materials Award for Teaching Excellence and Academic Leadership. The $1,000 cash award is given to a junior faculty member who displays strong campus leadership, creative course development, pioneering teaching methodology and instruction support along with model classroom teaching. The professor must also be helpful in advising students and illustrate a willingness to spend individual time with students in order to assist them academically.
At Shorter, Dr. Poussin teaches courses in French Language and Literature and is well respected as both a photographer and a writer.
“Dr. Fabrice Poussin has been exceptional as a professor in the Department of English, Modern Languages, and Liberal Arts,” Dr. Martin said. “He has a passion for motivating students to grow academically, professionally, and spiritually. Through the efforts of Dr. Poussin and his departmental colleagues, we look forward to seeing our programs in Literature, Languages, and Liberal Arts continue to be recognized for their high academic quality.”
A native of France, Dr. Poussin moved to the United States to pursue his studies at Rutgers University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history, a Master of Arts in French Literature, and a Doctor of Philosophy in French Literature, specifically writing on 19th century Baudelaire’s “The Flowers of Evil.” In addition to extensive campus involvement, he works with Shorter’s Department of English, Modern Languages, and Liberal Arts each semester to organize a fundraising effort using his photographs to raise money for the release party of The Chimes, Shorter’s award-winning literary magazine.
