Shorter University Alumni Association Presents Scholarships for 2016-17 Academic Year

Seven Shorter University students have been selected to receive Alumni Governing Board Scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year. The awards were presented during the university’s recent Awards Day by Steve Turrentine and Lisa Nelson, members of Shorter’s Class of 1990 and of the Alumni Governing Board’s Scholarship Committee.
“I am both humbled and grateful to report that, since the first Alumni Leadership Scholarship was awarded in 2006, our board has endowed two additional scholarships,” Turrentine said in announcing the awards. “This year’s awards mark milestones for us, as the total dollar amount of our awards now exceeds $40,000 which has been given to more than 30 deserving students, several of whom we have since proudly welcomed to our ranks, and whose gifts now help fund this effort.”
The Alumni Leadership Scholarship was awarded to Caleb Britt, of Newnan, Ga.; Allison Miller, of Griffin, Ga.; and Teri Anderson, of Savannah, Ga. This scholarship is awarded to students who exhibit proven leadership skills through on-campus activities and who demonstrate the desire and potential to use these skills as members of the Shorter University Alumni Association.
The Carol Williams Kirby Service Scholarship was presented to Devon Mason, of Boaz, Ala.; Abby Patrick, of Dallas, Ga.; and Jordan Walker, of Summerville, Ga. This scholarship is designed to recognize and reward Shorter students who have a demonstrated desire to serve on behalf of Shorter, both on campus and in the community.
The Dr. Wayne W. Dempsey Memorial Legacy Scholarship was presented to Whitney-Faith Smith, of Rome. This scholarship is presented to a student who has a parent or sibling who holds a degree from Shorter University.
